Lockheed Martin Tactical Defense Systems maintained these materials until their transfer to the University of Akron in 1999. The records were generated or used by the Lockheed Martin's predecessor companies: the Goodyear Aeronautics Department, Goodyear-Zeppelin Corporation, and Goodyear Aircraft Corp. Materials in the collection mainly cover the development and manufacturing of airships (dirigibles). The bulk of the collection consists of photographs, photograph albums, and glass plate slides. Of special note are the factory construction logbooks and photographs depicting the assembly of the U.S.S. Akron and the U.S.S. Macon.

The Goodyear-Zeppelin Corporation was formed in 1923 as a partnership between the Goodyear Corporation and the Zeppelin Company to build rigid-frame airships in the United States.
